"A thoughtful, observant, and often humorous tale about real connections." Kirkus Reviews

After ten years together, including some difficult times, Adam and Eva are still as in love as they were when they told each other every day that they loved each other every day more.

All-round adorable Adam - adopted, mixed-race, with a deep social conscience that he shares with his wife - claims to have no issues other than having no issues. Raised by remarkable parents, he has grown up happy and grounded, uninterested in his "other parents" or in why they might have had to give him up.

Having lost her father at fifteen, and still suffering a terrible relationship with "mother", Eva has more issues than she cares to admit, and it falls to an unexpected visit by two policemen to uncover a secret she has kept from her husband since the first day they met.

With the past at last explained, and the worst of it now apparently behind them, today has been a day of good news, which Eva is looking forward to sharing with the friends who have invited them to dinner. But their hosts seem to have very different plans for the evening, and the air is thick with tension as gradually the reason for their invitation begins to come out...

Its satirical humor sometimes black and irreverent, POLK, HARPER & WHO is a contemporary tale of complex family relationships, of lifelong friendships being put to the test, and ultimately of the triumph of imperfect London love within imperfect London lives.

POLK HARPER WHO Panayotis Cacoyannis 9781520246857 Books

I think this maverick author's special talent, evident in all his work to date, is his ability to blend together such unlikely opposites: the funny and the flippant with the sad and the profound, the romantic, sentimental and sensual with the lurid and macabre, the tasteful with the vulgar, the simple and straightforward with the complicated/complex/messed up.He also brings together unlikely people - Lynn and Eva's unfortunate father, Eva and Karen, whose friendship as children is imagined so well, and ultimately Adam and Eva, whose love for each other will magically rise above the consequences of how differently they have been dealing with their complicated pasts. In spite of these consequences, they continue to fit perfectly together, and what makes this 'fit' so perfect is its willingness to bend to imperfection.

More than his previous two novels - The Dead of August and Bowl of Fruit (1907) - this is a book that touches on contemporary issues, sensitively, angrily, satirically, in thought-provoking ways that are original and very entertaining. But these themes, and all the humorous episodes that bind them together, important as they are to the book are not what it's really about. POLK, HARPER & WHO is a book about love.

I've been deliberately general and vague so as not to spoil this wonderful novel's many surprises. But I'll end my sentimental review, which unfortunately I haven't been able to balance with anything lurid, by saying that I found the final chapter almost heart-stoppingly moving. More than any other part of the book, and above 'right' or 'wrong', I think it beautifully sums up the true meaning of love between two people who are both separate and one.

POLK HARPER WHO Panayotis Cacoyannis 9781520246857 Books Reviews

Another excellent read - I cannot properly explain why I like this author so much. Maybe it feels real to me, the way his characters think and live. Also the excellence of his writing. I have also read the Dead Of August, and have purchased Bowl of Fruit. I do not often recommend any books to my friends or fellow book group members, but I have recommended these books as I believe that they are interesting and well-written enough that anyone can enjoy them.
I enjoyed this one. This appears to be a deceptively simple love story. A young couple meet, and the fall instantly in love. They are still blissfully in love ten years later. So far so simple, but the great surprise is the strength of the peripheral characters in the story.
It is really a story of parenting – the good the bad and the ugly. We see these differing parenting styles through the eyes of the protagonists Adam and Eva. There is the best depiction of a wicked stepmother that I have ever read – there are no poisoned apples here, this depiction is chillingly subtle and horrifying and it permeates the story. I was not expecting the twist at the end and it surprised me. Such is the strength of the writing that I believed and understood the motivation totally. I truly would love to see a film of this novel. It deserves it.
I found myself drawn into this story almost immediately. From the very first somewhat sensual scene before a piece of news is dropped by a couple police officers that sets up the drama revealed by the rest of the book, I found myself fascinated by the characters and wanting to know more about what was really going on, especially in Eva’s head. It is pretty clear from the beginning that Eva has some major issues she struggles with from her past, something I can definitely relate to. Regardless of her issues though, it is clear that Adam adores her and almost worships her in a sense, which is so very sweet and while it might sometimes set up Adam for more heartbreak and frustration, he doesn’t really seem to mind that much because he is so in love.

This is an interesting, psychologically charged love story that really delves into the scars that can haunt us all our lives and affect every relationship we ever have. Definitely worth the read!
To read a novel by Panayotis Cacoyannis is to delve deeply into the psyches of always complex, and often unusual characters. Although his latest book, Polk, Harper and Who has it’s requisite number of kooky people, the two main characters, Adam and Eva, are not strange at all. That is not to say that they are simply drawn. Both are complex, Eva is, by far, the more complicated of the two. She has secrets, from her best friend, from her husband, and from herself. But they are not secrets meant to harm anyone, only to protect. Her greatest secret is why she continues to play the role of daughter to her stepmother, concealing that her real mother died to everyone, including the husband with whom she shares almost all else. We never learn the why of that particular secret, except that to divulge it, at least while her stepmother is alive, would threaten the delicate balance she has achieved in living under the parenting of a woman she hates. I must keep the other secrets hidden in this review, as they might spoil the story for future readers. Adam, her husband, although complex in terms of his art and his views, is more straightforward with those he loves, almost to the point of perfection. The reciprocal love of these two persons is the central theme of the novel.
As with other Cacoyannis novels, the language, the cleverness, the juxtaposition of heartbreak and humor and the presence of truly hilariously drawn characters is at least half the pleasure of reading the book. The author has a way of describing mundane scenes in ascending lines of subtle humor that, for me, often results in an outbreak of irrepressible laughter by the end of the scene. The attention to detail and the complexity of his desriptions of both character and setting are captivating.
I live a busy life with a crowded schedule, much of it consumed by reading and writing. It took me awhile to finish this book, but I must say that it was the pleasure to which I turned at the end of each day. It is well worth reading.
