Take a journey down the “backbone of the South,” and learn about the small towns and quirky customs that can only be found off the beaten path. Your guide is Chris Queen, a Georgia native who uses his family’s annual road trip from Atlanta to Disney World as the frame story for a walk through Southern history and culture.
The South, Queen beautifully illustrates in this book, is a diverse and vibrant region teeming with innovation, community spirit, and cultural offerings. In Football, Faith, and Flannery O’Connor you will
*Discover a few unexpected musical acts that emerged from the South -- and no, they're not all twang. Think you know Southern rock? Think again.
*Explore the proud academic tradition of the South; Southern colleges are more than just an excuse for a frat party.
*Learn why Flannery O’Connor said the South wasn’t Christian so much as it was “Christ-haunted.”
*Find out if Southern culture has the stamina to survive into the 21st century.
Whether you’re new to all the South has to offer, or you’re a fan of the South looking for a sentimental tour of everything you already love, Football, Faith, and Flannery O’Connor is a humorous, insightful, and entertaining glimpse into a vibrant and diverse region.
"Chris takes you on a journey through southern heritage and culture - giving you a glimpse of why we, southerners, are the way we are. From our love of football and God -- to the state fairgrounds and mama's kitchen or granddad's farm, he does a phenomenal job of breaking down the stereotypes and explaining the true hearts of wonderful, well-meaning southern folk. I found myself smiling in agreement reading nearly every page. If you grew up in the south - you will definitely be able to relate. If you've never understood southerners or our culture, this is a must read. You will gain a better understanding and appreciation of your fellow, southern Americans."

I enjoy Chris's writing and this is a good book describing a common travel area along the south and the culture that explains who we Southerner's are and why we have become that way. I really found the chapter on agriculture fascinating because of the historical impact it has had on the south in this nation's history.Product details

Football Faith and Flannery O'Connor A Love Letter to the South eBook Chris Queen Reviews
Great book. Really captures the spirit of the South.
This is a rather disappointing book. From the description I thought it would be full of amusing anecdotes and personal adventures as the author drove from Commerce in Georgia to Walt Disney world in Florida. Most of it was just going by a church and launching into Wikipedia like article concerning the history of religion in The South. They have the same denominational churches in all other parts of the country. Religion in The South is about attending church on Wednesday, bible classes, and Sunday school even when people are over 80 years of age and fifty or sixty men going to a Friday morning prayer breakfast. Most of that is unique to the South. Methodist and Episcopalian churches are not.
Drive through Athens, Georgia, and get another Wikipedia article on the history of Athens, the Uiversity of Georgia, the student population, revenues acquired through sports programs etc. Dry as dust. Guess what? Places in the North also have large universities with large student populations and sports programs. A more feel of what sports is like in Georgia would be to mention sitting in a diner and the first thing a person says by way of greeting on entering would be, "How 'bout them Dawgs!"
There are many things unique to the South that one would see on a long drive, most of that is not included. There is no mention of boiled peanut stands. Now that is unique. I bet you could drive for miles and miles through New England and not see a single boiled peanut stand. Grits are only mentioned in the final chapter. Nor is there any mention of how grits are no longer routinely served with breakfast in a diner. I now often have to ask for grits and pay extra. "We don't add grits any more. Northerners would come through, ask what it is then only take one taste and we would have to through the rest away" is one explanation I got. But then I live in Savannah not far off the I-95 main route taken by Northerners heading to Florida.
And, Northerners are most often referred to as "Northerners" not "Yankees" and I haven't heard "damnyankees" in ages. That could have been mentioned.
The final one quarter of the book is an accolade to Walt Disney World. Again one could simply look that up on Wikipedia and see just what is written in this book. It may be interesting but what has that to Southern history, culture and customs?
The very final chapter finally gets to the type of theme that I thought would be throughout the book, but it was far too little, far too late. Me? Now that I have finished this review, I'm off to get me some shrimp and grits.
Great book, enjoyed reading about the south and all wonderful things about it! I am sure many will enjoy this book.
Good read )
I enjoyed this book. If you are not familiar with the true South, then this is a good read to educate the uniformed about some of our way of life. To the familiar, as myself, who lives in one of the towns mentioned in this book, it was like walking down memory lane. If you really want to do away with the Hollywood stereotype of a Southerner, read this book. And...GO DAWGS!!
Wonderful book!! Great read ... So happy I bought it!!!!
