The damned among us who, for reasons known only the Elder Ones, have been called upon to write about zombies in a pop culture landscape where self-referential Abbott and Costello-like movies like Zombieland already exist, and Plants versus Zombies, and Zombie Johnny Cash T-shirts, for crying out loud, have an obligation to the universe to take a stab at something new and different. Something that’s never been done before. New Dawn Fades is full of such stabs. More than stabs, actually -- what you’ll find here are thrusts, slashes and downright eviscerations on a convention that just won’t die. A handful of strong-hearted writers with more guts than most of their creations stage an outright attack on the zombie genre. It is an assault of such bold, innovative, horrific and sometimes downright funny intensity that they manage, in the process, to turn the whole enterprise upside-down and burn it to the ground. Includes 20 New Stories from ... Amy Gaertner, Alex Azar, James Dorr, Donald Jacob Uitvlugt, Cayleigh Hickey, J Gerard Michaels, D R Pinney, Dustin Monk, Rose Blackthorn, J David Anderson, Jacqui Bryant, R J Hubbard, Lee Davis, Janet Gillett, Max Booth III, Brent Abell, Alan Jozwiak, Brandy Gaye, Ricky Massengale, and Dan Hart. Introduction by NYTimes Bestselling Author Joe Schreiber Edited by Eric Beebe

There are a number of short stories in this collection that ran in the same satire/thought provoking vein as Romero's classic movies. The subject matter is obviously more contemporary and for me brought up interesting ideas about the nature of what zombies really represent at this point. The scope of the stories tends to be pretty small given that they are short stories. They deal more with the interpersonal issues that arise out of loved ones or random strangers coming to take a bite out of your bicep. So if you are looking for something with a grand world sweeping point of view this might not be for you. However, if you are looking for interesting and tightly written this collection is pretty solid. There are some minor formatting and grammar errors but generally pretty readable. A great deal of the text seems to be stuck to the left side of the page but for me this was not much of an issue, just a little odd.
The whole collection reads pretty quickly given how short most of the individual pieces are, however, the number of stories seems reasonble. So far, it has been an enjoyable way to spend a few evenings with my kindle.
